Mark Lowey lives in Calgary, where he has worked as a professional journalist for 35 years.
Mark is the publisher and managing editor of EnviroLine, a business publication for western Canada’s environmental industry. From 2006 to 2013, he worked as the communications director for the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE) at the University of Calgary.
His journalism has garnered numerous awards, including two national science writing awards from the Canadian Science Writers’ Association, a Governor General’s Michener citation, the first Alberta Science Technology Foundation award for science journalism, and the first Canadian Petroleum Association/Banff Centre national award for environmental reporting.
Mark worked as a reporter at the Calgary Herald for 20 years, where he specialized in covering science, medicine and the environment. He became one of only seven “senior reporters” at the newspaper, a designation reserved for journalists who achieve continued excellence that represents the best of their profession.
He has written news releases, media backgrounders and complete media kits, and has helped a range of clients devise media communications strategies. He has written content for websites and peer-reviewed journals, as well as articles for general interest and trade magazines. His editing projects have included a book-length technical manuscript and a non-fiction book – both of which went on to receive awards. He is the author of a book of poetry published by Thistledown Press in Saskatoon.
Mark is a member of the Canadian Science Writers’ Association (CSWA) and of the Writers Guild of Alberta. He is a former national president of the CSWA and was a key organizer of the three CSWA annual conferences that have been held in Alberta –Calgary in 1991, Edmonton-Jasper in 2005 and Calgary-Banff in 2011.
